Learn the Different Stages of Breastmilk

For a newborn, breastmilk is the only prime source of nutrient. The body of any woman start preparing breastmilk immediate after the delivery. But the cells that are responsible for healthy milk production named lactocytes start developing in the 4th week of a pregnancy. The first stage of breastmilk is colostrum. Colostrum is produced immediate after the child birth. Colostrum is yellowish, sticky and very thick in consistency. Colostrum contains protein, minerals, antibodies, white blood cells, vitamins and probiotics that keep your baby safe from multiple infections. Colostrum is very crucial for baby's digestive system.


Transitional Milk


The second stage of breastmilk is transitinal milk. After the childbirth, transitional milk replaces colostrum after almost two to four days. Transitional milk is creamy and has more protein, fat, vitamins and lactose. Transitional milk is more white in colour in comparison to colostrum. While the production of transitional milk, human breasts start to stimulate which may create discomfort in breasts. But this discomfort can go if you regularly feed your child.


Mature Milk


The third stage of breastmilk is called mature milk. Mature milk is produced after a few week of childbirth. Mature milk is lighter both in colour and consistency. Your doctors and nutritionists would guide you about every necessary steps to increase breast milk while doing ultrasound imaging.
